    Experience an unforgettable evening of live music, entertainment, and community as Kollaboration presents some of the best local up-and-coming artists in Los Angeles' Asian American community.

  • The Finalists

    Six talented finalists were chosen through an intense and competitive round of auditions to compete for the chance to move on to the Kollaboration Star finale later this fall and perform for the national title and other prizes!


    Soul/Hip Hop Artist

    Acoustic guitar playing with soulful vocals. Infused with interesting hip hop and funk rhythm. FUZZZY from Los Angeles, CA. (Koreatown) With his unique style by blending three different type of genres has got him to do many different types of music work. FUZZZY's live performance styles have blends of rap, singing and jazz guitar riffs which gave him a chance to go on tour and have been in platforms like The Cypher Effect, Featured at Da Poetry Lounge 2017, Was aired on the Voice season seven and was a vocal coach for a BUZZFEED video "How to be a Kpop star".

    Doctors & Engineers

    Rock Band

    Doctors & Engineers are from a good family.


    Otherwise, they are a lively, five-piece West Coast South Asian band who celebrate the South Asian diasporic experience in America by re-imagining classic Desi film and folk music as psychedelic, surf rock and garage punk songs, alongside originals inspired by the band’s own hyphenated identities.

    Olivia Thai


    Hard work, dedication, and a bit of luck has led OLIVIA THAI to amass over 21,000,000 views on YouTube and over 200,000 supporters. Her fans and news sources around the world have been calling her, "the one-woman symphony" because of how she is able to incorporate beat-boxing, piano, guitar, violin, ukulele, and singing skills through a looping machine. She creates an orchestra weekly on her YouTube channel and daily on several live streaming platforms.

    Michael Barnum


    Michael Barnum is a singer/songwriter known worldwide for his daily live broadcasts on the streaming apps Periscope and KrueTV. Michael performs throughout Southern California and most recently headlined concerts at the Hotel Café, The Mint LA, Bar Lubitsch, and was a musical guest on LA 18 TV’s "Kababayan Today with G. Tongi." In 2016, Michael released his debut album "Trust," and his next single "Universe" is set for release later this summer. He is thrilled to be a part of KOLLABORATION 2017, and he thanks God, his family, and friends for their continued love and support.

    Alex Luu

    Spoken Word Artist

    Alex Luu is a spoken word poet and animator, having performed at college campuses and venues all over the U.S., from the Kennedy Center in DC to the Grammy Museum in LA. He's been featured on Write About Now, All Def Poetry, Get Lit Now, the Huffington Post, and other media platforms. His work aims to incorporate two very different mediums to tell a compelling story both visually and audibly. Much of his work tackles issues such as mental health, sexuality, social justice, and self-love. He hopes to be an inspiration for other Asian creatives; an exclamation that yellow kids can have a voice and take up space too.


    Hip Hop Artist

    jaeL is a Brooklyn born and raised independent rapper whose purpose is to serve as living evidence that a career in the arts is in fact possible and viable for AAPIs. His latest project “#FML” presents a narrative about a 2nd generation American's struggle to balance the expectations of immigrant parents while having dreams and life goals of their own that may differ from what their parents intended. It is a story of self-doubt, inspiration and eventually courage and commitment. He has been featured at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, at Ecaasu’s Holiday concert and has also opened for JR Aquinas and Nix.

    Timothy John

    Special Act - Musical

    Returning to the Kollaboration Los Angeles Stage is Timothy John, our 2016 Local and National Kollaboration winner. Timothy John is a blues guitar player and singer/songwriter originally from Edison, NJ and Orlando, FL but currently located in Orange County, CA. Timothy John attributes much of his influence to songwriters such as Eric Clapton, Jim Croce, Matt Corby and Hozier. He hopes to continually use his music to speak out and elevate Asian American musicians and artists.


    Special Act - Musical

    Born in San Francisco, California, Samica started singing to herself as a child. After listening to her Grandmother sing at the temple every week, she started to appreciate Indian classical music along with her American influences. Samica started to write her own songs on the guitar at the age of 13; today, she is enjoying the creative growth of her art. Knowing from a young age that she wanted to pursue her passion, Samica now feels ready to put herself, and her music out.

    Asif Ali

    Special Act - Standup Comedy

    Asif Ali is an actor and comedian best known for Wrecked (2016), Modern Family (2009) and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013). Growing up as a young East Indian in Arizona, Asif can tell you first hand how life was trying to explain his background to his friends which developed his humor



    Special Act - Improv Comedy

    VOLTRON is a combination of legendary Asian-American improvisors from the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. The team first assembled at the record-breaking show, "Scarlett Johansson Presents: AAPI Heritage Month" and are a regular fixture at the consistently sold-out "AsianAF" Comedy Variety Show on the UCB Sunset Mainstage

    Lip Sync Battle: Round 3

    Special Act

    The fan favorite Kollaboration LA Lip Sync Battle is back again and better than ever! Witness prominent members of the Asian American entertainment community clash for bragging rights by showing off their dope dance moves and pretending to sing songs to tracks! You won't want to miss this ultimate showdown!

    Our 2017 guest judges will help us decide who is will move onto the Kollaboration STAR National Finale in November!

    Jimmy O. Yang


    Jimmy O. Yang is an actor and standup comedian. He currently stars as Jian Yang on the Emmy-nominated HBO series Silicon Valley. Later this year, Jimmy will be making his feature film debut on Peter Berg's Patriot's Day, alongside Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon, John Goodman and JK Simmons. As a standup, Jimmy performed on The Arsenio Hall Show and received a rare standing ovation.

    Melissa Polinar


    ​Melissa Polinar first embarked on her journey when the industry was evolving into something new with the digital age. Many of her first steps forward as a singer-songwriter were in large part thanks to YouTube at its beginning. She bubbled to the top of the website’s music category with a collection of original songs, which instantly set her apart from most other curators who are more known for covers of pop music.

    Richie Menchavez


    Richie Menchavez is a DJ and the founder of TRAKTIVIST.com - a platform featuring almost 2,000 Asian American artists with the goal of archiving the deep musical history of Asian Americans in North America. Richie is also part of Transparent Agency, helping to manage artists such as Far East Movement, Dumbfoundead, Yultron, & Year of the OX, while also programming events such as the recent IDENTITY LA, a free festival celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in partnership with the City of Los Angeles.
